After conversations I’ve had both in my working and personal lives, I feel compelled to write this… I get it; this is a concerning time. Fundamental rights, education, funding for vital services, and more are all under attack. Hate and anxiety permeate the air, making us feel isolated, afraid, and alone. You are not alone. WE are not alone. At times such as these, it is more important than ever to remember that we are a community. That together with our families, friends, colleagues, peers, and mentors- all the way to the person who rings our groceries to someone passing us on the street, we are here for one another and not only will we weather this storm, we will resist it. We will resist it with love, compassion and empathy, and our collective drive to continue making Rochester an amazing place to live.
The wonderful (re)connections that have begun occurring at our Neighborhood Pulse meet ups and the excitement and passion from our communities surrounding the Monroe Ave Revitalization Coalition’s (MARC) efforts shine to light that positivity, patience, and praise have measurable and meaningful results; that being part of and engaging in our communities can and will lead to positive social change and alleviate a sense of alienation. I advocate for all to get to know those around you, to ask questions and share stories, to celebrate our differences as well as our similarities. Suspicion and paranoia cannot exist where there is empathy, community, and understanding.
Smile into the face of hate. Love and accept where there is fear. I have seen amazing results from a simple gesture; hate and fear vanish because of an outstretched hand. Even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. Let’s all laugh together loudly but love even louder.
SEAC and our Tool Shed is a safe space. My crew and I remain dedicated to our neighborhoods and communities, advocating for and connecting individuals to vital resources, strengthening and developing relationships with other agencies and groups, and getting our tools into the hands of our members so they can create the changes they want to make.
Joy is an act of resistance. We are not alone.
